Scott Joplin

American composer Scott Joplin (1868-1917).
The word ragtime probably derives from 'ragged time', referring to the way rags have syncopated melodies played against a regularly accented beat in the bass. Scott Joplin was the most important composer of piano rags. He also composed the opera 'Treemonisha'.
