This album explores the vocal and orchestral legacy of Icelandic composer Jón Leifs, known for his stark, evocative settings of Icelandic texts. Highlights include Hafís (Drift Ice), a monumental choral work capturing the power of Nordic nature; Gudrúnarkviða, a dramatic lament drawn from the Poetic Edda; and two early songs set to the poetry of Jóhann Jónsson, including the delicate Lullaby composed for the birth of Leifs’ daughter. The pastoral-romantic Night and the intense orchestral miniature Fine I round out this portrait of a composer whose music reflects Iceland’s landscapes, myths, and emotional depth. Performed by leading Icelandic soloists, Schola Cantorum, and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra under Anne Manson’s direction.
