Long forgotten, now considered one of Bach's great works. The St. John Passion for you at Easter time.
Bach - St. John Passion US $7.99
Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion was revised several times, the last in 1749. These changes constitute the basic material of all performances of the work used today, as in this recording.
A Passion soon forgotten completely, until Mendelssohn's spectacular revival performance of the St. Matthew Passion in 1829. Then the St. John Passion again became a subject of general interest. The special merits of the work, its unique qualities, were slow in coming to light, in receiving the appreciation it deserves.
The St. John Passion is performed by German Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart, with soloists Michael Schade, tenor (evangelist), Matthias Goerne, bass (Christ), Juliane Banse, soprano, Ingeborg Danz, alto, James Taylor, tenor and Andreas Schmidt, bass, together with the orchestra Bach-Collegium Stuttgart. All conducted by Helmuth Rilling. (Classics Today 10/10, highest rating).
