This album presents two world premiere recordings of major works by Scottish composer James MacMillan: The World’s Ransoming and the Cello Concerto, performed by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Osmo Vänskä.
Part of MacMillan’s powerful Easter triptych Triduum, these works stand independently while reflecting on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The World’s Ransoming is a deeply expressive concertante for cor anglais and orchestra, written for Christine Pendrill, exploring sacrifice and spiritual solitude with rich orchestral colors and symbolic references to liturgical music.
The Cello Concerto, written for and dedicated to Mstislav Rostropovich, is a dramatic, three-movement journey blending narrative and spiritual reflection. Soloist Raphael Wallfisch brings intensity to the roles of tormentor and tormented in "The Mockery," mourns senseless violence in "The Reproaches" (inspired by the 1996 Dunblane tragedy), and transforms sorrow into transcendent motion in "Dearest Wood and Dearest Iron."
Together, these works reveal MacMillan’s signature fusion of spiritual depth, emotional intensity, and innovative orchestration.
