Claudio Santoro

Brazilian composer Claudio Santoro (1919-1989) was born in Manaus and moved to Rio de Janeiro at the age of 12 and in 1937 he was already teaching the violin. He received a scholarship from the Guggenheim Foundation but was unable to enter the USA because of his communist conviction. Instead, in 1947, he moved to Paris where he studied under Nadia Boulanger.
On his return to Brazil in 1949, he entered a nationalist phase, but for political reasons he moved to Germany in 1967. He became resident artist in the former West Berlin and the Brahms House in Baden-Baden.
