The Gigues are dedicated to Scotland, where that ancient dance (jig, gige) originated, and are based on a folk song or bagpipe theme which appears in the unaccompanied oboe d'amore after the first twenty measures and which in the course of the piece is reserved almost exclusively for this instrument.
