Joseph Haydn probably composed eight cello concertos in all. Even the two surviving ones were unknown for a long time. In the case of this D major concerto in fully-fledged Classical style, it was attributed to Anton Kraft (the solo cellist in the court orchestra of the Esterházys) until 1954, when Haydn's autograph was discovered.
