Stenhammar - The Complete Solo Piano Music, Vol.1

Stenhammar - The Complete Solo Piano Music, Vol.1
Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871–1927), one of the key figures of Swedish late romanticism, wrote relatively little for his own instrument – but what he did write is idiomatic and deeply rewarding. This first volume opens with the Three Fantasies, Op. 11 (1895), among his most popular piano works, and closes with Late Summer Nights, Op. 33, his last solo piano work, completed in 1914 and heard here with two related manuscript movements appended. In between come several pieces missing from Stenhammar's own work list: the graceful Intermezzo, the Three Small Piano Pieces intended to be played to children, two impromptus with echoes of Chopin and Brahms, and the precocious Allegro con moto ed appassionato, written when he was just 17 or 18. The Italian-born, Sweden-based pianist Lucia Negro, a pupil of Carlo Zecchi and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, plays the lavishly cased 1896 Steinway of the Hallwyl Museum in Stockholm, restored by Steinway & Sons in 1990. Penguin Guide: 3 stars.
