In 1938/39, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, Kodály wrote 'The Peacock'. It soon became one of Kodály's most successful orchestral works. The basically pentatonic folk-song that inspired this remarkable set of variations represents the peacock as a symbol of freedom from opression. Outstanding: Classic CD.
