American composer Ernest Bloch (1880-1959).
He was essentially a Jewish composer. Born in Switzerland, later took out American citizenship, serving as director of the Cleveland Institute 1920-1925 and later of the San Francisco Conservatory. The creator of music of great spiritual expression, distinguished in his lifetime by a long list of honors.
