Delius, Frederick
English composer Frederick Delius (1862-1934) was helped by his father to Florida as an orange-grower. Later he persuaded his father to support him for musical studies at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany, where he met Grieg. He settled in Paris and became the friend of Gauguin, Strindberg and Munch. In 1897 he settled in Grez-sur-Loing wih the painter Jelka Rosen, later his wife. The musical language of Delius with a characteristic harmony and lyricism of its own has a rhapsodic intensity of feeling.
