Franz Liszt composed relatively few organ works, but those he wrote are among the grandest in the repertoire. The Phantasie und Fuge über 'Ad nos, ad salutarem undam' (1850) is enormous — lasting over 27 minutes — based on a chorale from Meyerbeer's Le prophète and unfolding as a vast, organically unified structure of fantasy and strict counterpoint. The Präludium und Fuge über 'BACH' (1855/1870), built on the famous four-note motif, is a tightly argued and dazzlingly brilliant work. The Variationen über 'Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen' (1863) takes Bach's cantata ground bass and subjects it to an extended set of profound variations. Hans Fagius plays the organ of Katarina Church, Stockholm.
