Sebastian Fagerlund (b.1972) is one of the most distinctive Finnish composers of his generation, writing orchestral music that fuses restless rhythmic energy with static, contemplative sound-fields. This album brings together three of his works in world-première recordings: the vividly effervescent Clarinet Concerto (2005–06), conceived for and performed here by Christoffer Sundqvist; the Partita for string orchestra and percussion (2007–09), a meditative triptych on transience and prayer; and the orchestral tone poem Isola (2007), a Symbolist 'isle of the dead' inspired by the former hospital island of Själö in the Turku archipelago. The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Dima Slobodeniouk, a long-standing champion of the composer's music, in recordings made in the presence of the composer.
