Jolivet, André
French composer André Jolivet (1905-1974).
Versatile in the arts, Jolivet was a member of the composers grouped together as Jeune France. As a director of music for the Comédie francaise he wrote a quantity of incidental music. Elsewhere he based his work on principles that stemmed from his interest in the magical and incantatory element fundamental to human music. Throughout his career Jolivet concerned himsielf with ancient, archaic and ritual subjects. This also had consequences for his musical style in a narrower sense, in that modes play an important part. From 1966 onwards professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire.
