This album presents two early orchestral works by Jean Sibelius that reflect his fascination with Finnish mythology and nature: Lemminkäinen Suite, Op. 22 and En saga, Op. 9.
The Lemminkäinen Suite (1895, rev. 1897/1939) is based on the Kalevala epic and follows the adventures of the reckless hero Lemminkäinen. The four movements include the eerie The Swan of Tuonela, the vivid Lemminkäinen’s Return, and two dramatic tone poems that explore love, death, and heroism in mythical Finland.
En saga (1892, rev. 1902) is a stand-alone tone poem that, while not tied to a specific story, evokes a powerful narrative mood. It is atmospheric, restless, and poetic, offering an early glimpse into Sibelius’s unique orchestral voice.
Performed by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra under Osmo Vänskä, this recording captures the youthful energy and growing mastery of a composer on the verge of greatness.
