Kleven, Arvid
Norwegian composer Arvid Kleven (1899-1929).
Born in Trondheim, he arrived in Kristiania (Oslo) at the age of only 19 as a flautist in the orcehstra of the National Theatre. From 1919 until his death he played in the newly established Philharmonic Society (now the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra). Apart from short study visits to Paris and Berlin while on leave from the orchestra he was almost completely self-taught as a composer. His compositions are striking early examples of Norwegian expressive modernism.
