Nikita Koshkin - Music for Guitar
Catalog Number: BIS1236
Elena Papandreou plays the guitar music of Nikita Koshkin, one of today's most popular guitar composers – including the world première recording of the large-scale Guitar Sonata, written for her, and the Gothic, Poe-inspired Usher Waltz.
Nikita Koshkin - Music for Guitar
Nikita Koshkin (b.1956) decided to become a musician after hearing Andrés Segovia as a teenager, and he rapidly achieved fame with his imaginative suite The Prince's Toys. His music combines drama with humour and parody, avant-garde effects with Russian romantic fervour, and has been taken up by guitarists all over the world. This recital by the Greek guitarist Elena Papandreou ranges from the playful miniature Polka-Papandreou, written as a gift for her, to the virtuoso Usher Waltz (1984), inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher. The centrepiece is the half-hour Guitar Sonata (1998), dedicated to Papandreou and heard here in its world première recording.
