Nikolayeva, Tatiana
Russian composer Tatiana Nikolayeva (1924-1993), pianist, composer and teacher. She is a familiar name to many as one of the greatest forces behind the wealth of piano talent to flood from the former Soviet Union during the 20th century. Winner of the 1950 Bach Leipzig Piano Competition. She had a long working association with Shostakovich. Nikolayeva died whilst playing the Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues (written for her) at a public concert in San Francisco in 1993.
