The catastrophic 1897 première of his First Symphony devastated Rachmaninov and plunged him into a three-year creative silence. His Second Symphony, by contrast, stands among the great late-Romantic symphonies – expansive, richly scored and famous for the soaring clarinet melody of its slow movement.
