Raff, Joachim
Swiss/German composer Joachim Raff (1822-1882). He walked from Zürich to Basel in a rainstorm to hear Franz Liszt perform in concert. Arriving at the sold-out hall, one of Liszt's secretaries took pity on the drenched young man and gave him a seat on the stage along with Liszt's closest friends. This chance meeting changed Raff's life. Eventually Liszt invited Raff to Weimar to work as his secretary and general musical assistant. He is best known as 'Liszt's orchestrator'.
