German composer Franz Ries (1846-1932).
Grandson of Beethoven's teacher Franz Anton Ries and the nephew of Beethoven's pupil and friend Ferdinand Ries. Among his teachers was Henri Vieuxtemps in Paris, in whose quartet he played. After a neural complaint forced Ries to abandon his promising career as a virtuoso in 1873, he became a successful music dealer and publisher.
