Christopher Rouse (b.1949) is one of America's most prominent composers, winner of both a Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy Award. Iscariot (1989), a single-movement Largo for chamber orchestra, takes the betrayer of Jesus as its subject and channels the weight of that theme into concentrated, unflinching music. The Clarinet Concerto (2001) was written for Martin Fröst, who gives a brilliant and committed account; it is a major addition to the modern concerto repertoire. Symphony No.1 (1986), marked Grave, lamentoso, is one of Rouse's most powerful orchestral statements — dark in mood but compelling in its logic and forward momentum. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Alan Gilbert.
