This disc celebrates the remarkable partnership between trombone virtuoso Christian Lindberg and composer Jan Sandström, gathering four of the works Sandström wrote for him. They include the Emperor's Chant, inspired by the deluded monarch of Selma Lagerlöf's Emperor of Portugallia; the Trombone Concerto No.2, Don Quixote, which portrays the errant knight in a series of vivid scenes; the whimsical Wahlberg Variations; and the exhilarating A Short Ride on a Motorbike. Lindberg is partnered by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra under Osmo Vänskä, in performances recorded in the presence of the composer. By turns comic, poignant and thrilling, the music shows just how far a serious composer and a modern trombone virtuoso can travel together.
