Schnittke, Alfred
Russian composer Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998). From the 1980s, Schnittke's music gained increasing exposure and international acclaim. Schnittke has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including Austrian State Prize i 1991, Japan's Imperial Prize in 1992, and the Slava-Gloria-Prize in Moscow in 1998. His early studies in Vienna were followed by formal training at the Moscow Conservatory, where he later taught. His musical language is eclectic, combining a number of styles, contemporary and traditional.
