Schnittke - Peer Gynt

Schnittke - Peer Gynt
Written in the mid-1980s, this full-length ballet on Peer Gynt unfolds less as accompaniment to dance than as a vast, symphonic drama in its own right. Schnittke follows Peer through four interlocking “Kreise”: the raw Norwegian landscapes, the garish realm of show business and self-delusion, the haunted homecoming, and a final “sound-space” where an a cappella chorus murmurs like distant judgment. Familiar dance rhythms, Grieg-like pastorals and sly film-music clichés are continually warped by troll-music, flexatone gusts and the implacable tolling of bells, so that every waltz or march seems to hide another truth beneath its surface. Motifs for Solveig, Åse, the Woman in Green and Peer’s many “aspects” recur, collide and unravel, tracing a spiritual struggle between seduction, flight and the possibility of redemption. Under a taut, intensely theatrical reading from the Royal Swedish Orchestra and Eri Klas, the score’s extremes of brutality, tenderness and hushed transcendence are sharply etched.
