Schulhoff, Erwin

Czech composer and pianist Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942).
Recommended by Dvorák he was accepted at the age of 10 as a piano student at the Prague Conservatory. Studied in Vienna in 1906, Leipzig in 1908, in Cologne in 1913. Passing his exams with distinction he won the Felix-Mendelssohn-Prize as a pianist in 1913 and as a composer 1918. Lived in Germany until 1923, where he devoted himself to dadaism and jazz. His work include an opera, ballets, six symphonies, numerous works of chamber music, solo works, concertos, songs and choral works. He applied for a visa to the Soviet Union in 1941 and died in 1942 in the concentration camp Wülzburg.
