Finland Awakes - Patriotic Music by Jean Sibelius
Catalog Number: BIS1115
Penguin Guide 3 stars; Gramophone: outstanding.
This album brings together Sibelius’s rousing Press Celebrations Music (1899) — composed as a subtle protest against Russian censorship — and other early patriotic works. With stirring tableaux from Finnish history and the powerful finale later revised as Finlandia, the music reflects a growing national identity during turbulent times. Also included are the dramatic Breaking of the Ice on the Oulu River, and three choral works, including the heroic Song for Lemminkäinen and the bold Atenarnes sång. Performed with passion by Finnish forces, this recording captures the spirit of a nation finding its voice through music.
Made in Sweden since 1999. In collaboration with Textalk.
