This album features Jean Sibelius’s rarely heard incidental music for two theatrical works: Jokamies (Everyman), Op. 83 and Belsazars gästabud (Belshazzar’s Feast), Op. 51, along with the short piece Grevinnans konterfej (The Countess’s Portrait).
Jokamies, composed in 1916, is based on Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s morality play. It follows Everyman’s journey from worldly pleasure to spiritual redemption, with Sibelius’s music closely following the drama's emotional arc—dark, solemn, and deeply expressive.
Belsazars gästabud, written in 1906, is more exotic and vividly orchestrated, capturing the opulence and downfall of the Babylonian king Belshazzar. Highlights include Khadra’s sensual and fatal dances and the dramatic appearance of the writing on the wall.
The Countess’s Portrait, a gentle melodrama for strings, rounds off the program.
Performed by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Lahti Chamber Choir under Osmo Vänskä, this recording brings to life Sibelius’s theatrical imagination, much of it previously unavailable on disc.
