Stanley, John
English composer and organist John Stanley (1712-1786), blind from childhood. In 1734 he as appointed organist to the Society of the Inner Temple. In 1760, after Handel's death, Stanley succeded him as director of oratorio programmes at Covent Garden and also directed the annual performances of Messiah at the Foundling Hospital.
