Mari Takano (b.1960) is a Japanese composer whose music creates richly individual sonic worlds that blend acoustic instruments with electronics and unconventional timbres. The LigAlien series (I–IV, 2003–08) forms the spine of this disc: LigAlien I pairs soprano and tenor saxophone with piano; LigAlien II combines oboe, violin and 17-string koto; LigAlien III is for violin and harp; and LigAlien IV adds electronics to the saxophone duo. Jungibility (2005–06) is for solo piano, and Full Moon (2008–09) for violin and electronics provides a haunting conclusion. The diverse ensemble of soloists — including saxophonists Nathan Nabb and Masahito Sugihara, pianist Winston Choi and violinist Mari Kimura — bring committed advocacy to this distinctive and imaginative music.
