Tubin - Symphony No.4 and No.9
Catalog Number: BIS227
This album presents Eduard Tubin’s lyrical Symphony No. 4 (1943), the concise Symphony No. 9 “Sinfonia semplice” (1969), and the energetic Toccata (1937). Written in exile and under turbulent circumstances, these works reveal Tubin’s unique voice — from the Nordic lyricism of the Fourth Symphony to the clarity and directness of the Ninth and the exuberant brilliance of the Toccata.
This recording explores three pivotal orchestral works by Estonian composer Eduard Tubin (1905–1982). His Symphony No. 4 “The Lyrical” (1943), composed just before his flight to Sweden, survived wartime bombings and conveys a striking contrast to his dramatic Third Symphony — offering instead a Nordic gentleness and glowing lyricism. The Symphony No. 9 “Sinfonia semplice” (1969), premiered in Stockholm, reflects Tubin’s later style: a more concise, transparent language, with movements flowing from elegiac calm to rhythmic vitality. Completing the program is the sparkling Toccata (1937), a vibrant and playful orchestral essay showcasing Tubin’s rhythmic drive and orchestral color. Together, these works highlight Tubin’s resilience and his remarkable contribution to 20th-century symphonic music.
