Turnage, Mark-Anthony
English composer Mark-Anthony Turnage (b. 1960). In 1981, when he won the Guinness Composition Prize, he had already studied at the Royal College of Music. Winning the prestigious Mendelssohn Prize made it possible for him to work in Tanglewood with Gunther Schuller. There Hans Werner Henze became his mentor. With a unique mixture of jazz and classical style Turnage has created an 'urban' music that is very colourful, often aggressive, yet always lyrical, dramatic and direct.
