White, Robert
English composer Robert White (c1538-1574).
In 1560 he obtained his BMus at Cambridge. By 1562 White had moved from Cambridge to nearby Ely Cathedral, succeeding Christopher Tye (whose daughter he married) as master of the choristers, and four years later he went on to a better paid post at Chester Cathedral. Further promotion came in 1569, when he was appointed master of the choristers at Westminister Abbey.
His liturgical music to Latin texts is considered particularly fine, placing him in the front rank of English composers of the Elisabethan epoch.
