Lalo - Orchestral Works
Catalog Number: BIS1296
Édouard Lalo is remembered for his Symphonie espagnole and little else – yet his orchestral flair dazzled Debussy, Chabrier and Dukas alike. This disc gathers famous and forgotten works by a true composer's composer, played with bold, full-blooded conviction.

Édouard Lalo belongs among those composers whom posterity has reduced to a single work – in his case the ever-popular Symphonie espagnole – while the rest of a distinctive output has languished unheard. This collection sets the familiar beside the neglected, including music from the ballet Namouna, whose ‘exotic’ themes so enchanted Debussy and Chabrier even as its 1882 première was booed. Lalo's gift for colour and orchestration, admired by Dukas and Fauré, runs through every bar. Kees Bakels and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra play with gutsy rhythms and total commitment, making a persuasive case for this important voice in nineteenth-century French music.
