Guarnieri - Symphonies Nos.2 & 3

Guarnieri - Symphonies Nos.2 & 3
This recording features the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra and conductor John Neschling in three landmark works by M. Camargo Guarnieri (1907–1993), one of Brazil’s greatest symphonic voices. The Abertura Concertante, dedicated to Aaron Copland, reveals Guarnieri’s skill in crafting original themes rooted in Brazilian rhythm while avoiding folkloric cliché. Symphony No. 2 “Uirapuru”, named after an Amazonian bird and dedicated to Heitor Villa-Lobos, brims with melodic richness and vibrant orchestration, combining lyrical introspection with festive energy. Symphony No. 3, inspired by an indigenous mourning song of the Pareci people, merges calm and violence in a compelling narrative and won first prize in São Paulo’s 400th anniversary competition. Together, these works illustrate Guarnieri’s blend of classical form, contrapuntal mastery, and Brazilian soul, making a strong case for his place alongside the 20th century’s most distinctive symphonists.
