Throughout his life Grieg sought to capture "the Norwegian countryside, the Norwegian way of life and Norwegian history and poetry in music", and nowhere is that ambition more concentrated than in his writing for unaccompanied choir. This collection ranges from luminous arrangements of folk-songs and lyric pieces to the Two Religious Choral Songs and the profound Four Psalms, Op. 74 – the composer's very last work, in which soloist and choir trade age-old Norwegian hymn tunes. The Norwegian Soloists' Choir (Det Norske Solistkor), widely regarded as one of the world's finest chamber choirs, brings both radiance and rare sensitivity to this native repertoire. Under their conductor Grete Pedersen they reveal the "hidden harmonies" that Grieg heard in his country's folk melodies, with several members stepping forward as soloists.
