This album presents three works by Finnish-born composer Bernhard Henrik Crusell (1775–1838), a leading clarinet virtuoso of his time and an important composer of wind music in early 19th-century Scandinavia. The Introduction et Air suédois, Op. 12, for clarinet and orchestra, is based on a popular Swedish song first published in 1795. Crusell debuted this work in 1804 in Stockholm, and it remained part of his core repertoire. The version recorded here reflects a later revision with a new Allegro introduction replacing the original Adagio. The Concertino for bassoon and orchestra was composed for Crusell’s son-in-law, the renowned bassoonist Frans Preumayr, and premiered in Stockholm in 1829. Although reflecting the style of early 19th-century French music, it remained relatively little performed during Preumayr’s European tour. The piece includes a melodic reference to Boieldieu and concludes with a virtuosic Polacca. The Sinfonia Concertante in B-flat major, Op. 3, is a triple concerto for clarinet, horn, and bassoon. It was frequently performed in 19th-century Stockholm and showcases Crusell’s affinity for French instrumental style. The final movement is built on a theme from Cherubini’s opera Les deux journées, developed into a series of demanding variations. Performers include clarinetist Anna-Maija Korsimaa-Hursti, bassoonist László Hara, and horn player Ib Lanzky-Otto, accompanied by the Tapiola Sinfonietta under the direction of Osmo Vänskä. This recording marks the BIS debut for several of the soloists and the orchestra.
