Hilding Rosenberg (1892–1985) was by the end of his long life the most celebrated figure in Swedish music — a composer of rare intellectual breadth who named Ralph Waldo Emerson as his favourite philosopher and forged a lasting friendship with Wilhelm Stenhammar. His Symphony No.3 (1939) is one of his most substantial works: a four-movement composition of considerable emotional depth, dramatic and searching in character. The Symphony No.6 'Sinfonia semplice' (1951) is lighter in texture, its title reflecting not simplicity of content but an economy of means. Together they offer a compelling portrait of Rosenberg's symphonic world. The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Sweden, is conducted by Mario Venzago.
