Mezzo-soprano Kitty Whately and pianist William Vann explore the creative circle around Ralph Vaughan Williams, pairing his songs with those of two composers he mentored at the Royal College of Music, Elizabeth Maconchy and Grace Williams. Vaughan Williams's nine songs span fifty years, from The Sky Above the Roof (1908) and the Four Poems by his niece Fredegond Shove to the Four Last Songs on poems by his second wife, Ursula. Maconchy's concise, intense settings sit alongside Grace Williams's folk-inflected songs, including the first ever recording of her cycle Billows of the Sea. The result is a portrait of a teacher who, as Maconchy put it, had no use for ready-made solutions – and of pupils who found voices entirely their own.
