Fauré: Sonatas for Violin and Piano Transcriptions
Catalog Number: ALPHA1177
Kerson Leong and Jonathan Fournel perform both Fauré violin sonatas alongside songs and character pieces arranged for violin and piano — a richly varied portrait of the composer's lyrical world.
Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) wrote two violin sonatas that stand among the finest in the French repertoire. The Sonata No.1 in A major Op.13, composed in his late twenties, burst onto the Parisian scene with its combination of classical clarity and Romantic warmth; its four movements remain among his most immediately appealing works. The programme is enriched by a selection of transcriptions: Fauré's Nocturne Op.57 No.5, songs arranged for violin and piano — Après un rêve (arr. Leong), Les Berceaux (arr. Leong), Fileuse (arr. Auer), Clair de Lune (arr. Périlhou) — as well as the Berceuse Op.16 and Soir Op.83. Kerson Leong (violin) and Jonathan Fournel (piano) bring lyrical intelligence and natural affinity to this music, making the transition from song to instrumental medium feel wholly natural.
