Following the critical and public success of their Mahler Ninth, Philipp von Steinaecker and the Mahler Academy Orchestra continue their period-instrument survey of the symphonies with No. 5, prepared from the new Breitkopf & Härtel Urtext edition and its many authorial corrections. The orchestra belongs to the Gustav Mahler Academy in Bolzano, founded by Claudio Abbado, bringing together young professionals and seasoned players from Europe's leading ensembles. Using instruments carefully modelled on those of the Vienna Philharmonic around 1900, they return to the roots of Mahler-era performance practice and cast fresh light on the score – part of the Academy's 'originalklang' project.
