Drawing on his own Romanian-German upbringing, baritone Konstantin Krimmel joins his longtime partner, pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz, to bring together Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) and Eusebius Mandyczewski (1857–1929), two composers who met in Vienna in the late 1870s and remained close friends. Alongside Brahms – the established master and author of nearly 200 Lieder – stands the younger Mandyczewski, raised amid the Romanian and Ukrainian traditions of his native Bukovina. His eighteen Romanian Songs, published in an 1885 bilingual edition on texts by the poet Vasile Alecsandri, are recorded here for the first time in their original Romanian. Sharing a devotion to Schubert – whose complete works Mandyczewski was the first to publish – a fascination with folk song and a taste for melancholy, the two voices meet in a recital steeped in that very mood.
