Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 1, KV 37 & 27, KV 595, Clarinet Concerto, KV 622
This volume in Alpha's 'Next Generation Mozart Soloists' series pairs Mozart's earliest piano concerto (K. 37, written when he was just 11) with his final one (K. 595, completed a year before his death) — a remarkable arc of creative development spanning three decades. Pianist Mishka Rushdie Momen, who studied with Imogen Cooper, Richard Goode, and András Schiff, brings clarity and poetic insight to both works under conductor Howard Griffiths. Blaž Šparovec, principal clarinettist of the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne, rounds out the disc with the luminous Clarinet Concerto K. 622 — a work he describes as 'a concerto that can only be compared to an opera in which the basset clarinet plays all the roles'.
