Lukas Geniušas explores the Romantic fantasy as a form synonymous with freedom and uninterrupted flight, presenting two works for piano and orchestra that rarely share a programme. Schubert's C major 'Wanderer' Fantasy (1822) is given in Liszt's 1851 transcription, which transforms the solo work's four seamless sections into a concerto-like journey of continuous momentum and monothematic logic. Tchaikovsky's Concert Fantasy of 1884, more classical in spirit, cultivates virtuosity and instrumental brilliance as a foil to the Schubert-Liszt's introspective intensity. With the Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen under Modestas Pitrėnas, this may well be a unique coupling on disc.
