This recording presents organ improvisations on Christmas carols from around the world in a varied mix of different styles and forms: simple arrangements of straightforward melodies are represented alongside multi-part developments, more complex compositional techniques and symphonic forms. The focus is on diversity – both in the selected song themes and in the improvisation techniques used. The pieces, improvised freely and without much preparation by Ruben Sturm based on the monophonic melody templates, also aim to document the immense colourfulness of the Munich Cathedral organ in all its facets.
