Benjamin Britten was fascinated by the French language and its poetry, and this album gathers his vocal works in French. The Quatre chansons françaises, setting Victor Hugo and Paul Verlaine, were written when the composer was only sixteen, while Les Illuminations, Op. 18 (1939), his Rimbaud settings for high voice and strings, alternate soaring lyricism with sudden expressionist outbursts. Between them come Britten's tender arrangements of French folksongs. Cyrille Dubois, the Gramophone Award-winning tenor of the acclaimed complete Fauré songs, continues his exploration of French vocal music, partnered by the Orchestre national de Metz and its music director David Reiland.
