This two-disc anthology brings together harpsichordist Christophe Rousset's deeply personal selection of recordings of Francois Couperin, drawn from sessions made with Les Talens Lyriques and as a soloist between 1993 and 2018, including a number of previously unreleased tracks. The programme ranges widely across Couperin's output, from harpsichord favourites such as Les Barricades mysterieuses and Le Tic-Toc-Choc to the devastating Troisieme Lecon de Tenebres, instrumental suites from Les Nations and Les Gouts reunis, and rarely heard vocal and viol works. Rousset, who has lived with this music for some forty-five years, describes Couperin as a composer who reveals himself only gradually, his pieces filled with poetry, humour and an exquisite refinement comparable to the paintings of Watteau. Featuring long-standing collaborators including Sandrine Piau, Veronique Gens and Stephane Degout, this collection offers both a loving tribute and an ideal introduction to one of the great masters of the French Baroque.
