Venite alla danza!
Catalog Number: A602
Come and dance! laReverdie invites us into the joyful world of medieval dance music, from 13th-century French rondelli and Occitan dansas to Italian ballate, laude and estampies – music for courtly festivities and even for sacred celebration.
In the Middle Ages, dance was part of every aspect of daily life – a celebration of the joy of living, practised not only at court and in the town square but also in religious contexts. The Italian early music ensemble laReverdie, whose members both sing and play a wide range of instruments, explore this repertoire in a roughly chronological journey from the 13th to the 15th century. The program includes the Easter rondellus De Patre principio, the Occitan dansa Ben volgra, Stella splendens from the Llibre Vermell of Montserrat, the famous Italian estampie Isabella and ballate and laude connected with dance. Where only the texts of dance laude survive, the ensemble has reconstructed them using melodies from contemporary sources, bringing lost music back to life. Inspired by the merry company of Boccaccio's Decameron, this is a vivid and exuberant celebration of medieval music-making.
