Gentle Dark
Skylark Vocal Ensemble and its artistic director Matthew Guard bring together two contemporary requiems by composers who share a deep debt to the sacred choral music of Herbert Howells. Gregory W. Brown's Gentle Dark is a secular requiem in four movements, setting a text by the American writer James Agee, and appears here in its world premiere recording. Eleanor Daley's eight-movement Requiem receives its first complete professional recording. Both works combine rich harmony, emotional depth and a lyrical, modern choral idiom, and the programme closes with Brown's Love Song in its version for mixed voices.
