Francisco António de Almeida (1702–1755) is one of the most significant figures in Portuguese Baroque music. He held prominent positions in the Royal Chapel and the Patriarchal Church, and in 1733 he composed the first Italian opera by a Portuguese composer to be staged in Portugal. Almeida’s music has been frequently explored by the ensemble Os Músicos do Tejo (directed by Marcos Magalhães and Marta Araújo), which has forged a remarkable path on the European early music scene, bringing to light previously unknown or inaccessible works from Portugal’s musical heritage. This recording features a concert programme which represents the latest advance in research on the Portuguese Baroque repertoire. It stems from the discovery of manuscript score excerpts from the two-act “dramma per musica” “Gl’Incanti d’Alcina” (1730) and the serenata “Il Vaticinio di Pallade e di Mercurio” (1730–31). Its arias received their modern premiere by Os Músicos do Tejo and a superb quartet of singers, each with deep experience and knowledge of the Baroque period: two of Portugal’s most renowned vocalists — soprano Sandra Medeiros and tenor Marco Alves dos Santos — alongside two rising stars on the international scene — Austrian soprano Johanna Falkinger and Spanish mezzo-soprano Lucía Caihuela.
