Luís Tinoco: Kokyuu
Catalog Number: Next0172025
The new double album KOKYUU is a fascinating compilation of five works for orchestra and soloist, written by Luís Tinoco between 2019 and 2024. It is a deep dive into the profound sonic imagination of the acclaimed Portuguese composer, traversing multiple atmospheres and showcasing the virtuosity and sensitivity of remarkable soloists.
The first disc opens with “Kokyuu – Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra”. Composed during the pandemic, the piece explores the metaphor of breathing and is reinterpreted here by jazz-rooted saxophonist Ricardo Toscano. In “Work Songs”, the voice of Lívia Nestrovski takes the lead in a piece built upon traditional melodies from Portugal, Cape Verde, and Brazil. The concertos for cello and accordion reflect the connection between Tinoco and the two instrumentalists who inspired them, for whom the works were destined: Filipe Quaresma and João Barradas. Finally, the clarinet concerto “Entre Silêncios” is an exploration of sound spatialization, with instruments moving around the hall during the live performance, resulting in a unique experience for the audience.
KOKYUU features performances by the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, conducted by Pedro Neves, and the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, conducted by Joana Carneiro and Bastien Stil. The album is poised to become a landmark of Portuguese contemporary music and consolidates Luís Tinoco’s position on the international music scene as an artist who combines clarity of intention with an artistic execution full of flair, sensitivity, and soul.
